I hear many parents say that their teenagers are too independent. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on our own feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out bravely on their own, most of them are trying to seize at one another’s hands for safety.
They say they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But the reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon—into a larger cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly opened up a teenager market. These days every teenager can learn from newspapers and TV what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to great difficulty for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the difficulty is worth getting over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come—with the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts. 55. The writer’s purpose in writing this text is to tell _________. A. readers how to be popular in the world
B. teenagers how to learn to decide things for themselves C. parents how to control and guide their children D. people how to understand and respect each other 56. Teenagers should ___________, according to the text. A. rebel against their parents B. find their real self
C. become different from others in as many ways as possible D. obey what their parents say
57. What does the underlined word “ counts” mean? A. To recite or list numbers. B. To have value or importance. C. To share some thoughts. D. To be different.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register, I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I
stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars—was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
“ Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
“ Thank you” —two powerful words. They’re easy to say and mean so much. 58. The author planned to stop at Oklahoma City __________. A. to visit a friend B. to see his parents C. to pay at the cash register D. to have more gas for his car 59. What happened when the author found smoke coming out of his car? A. He had it pulled back to the gas station. B. The couple sent him a business card. C. The couple offered to help him. D. He called his friend for help.
60. The battery of the author’s car was dead because __________. A. something went wrong with the lights B. the meeting lasted a whole day C. he forgot to turn off the lights D. he drove too long a distance
61. By telling his own experiences, the author tries to show ______. A. how to write a thank –you letter B. how to deal with car problem
C. the kind-heartedness of older people D. the importance of expressing thanks

Travelling can be a way to gain life experiences, especially during Spring Break—a week long school vacation in the United States. But what if you’re a student and don’t have enough money for a trip? Don’t worry. Here are some useful suggestions.
Save: This probably is the most important preparation for travelling. Cut expenses to fatten your wallet so you’ll have more choices about where to go and how to get there.
Plan ahead: Don’t wait until the last minute to plan your trip. Tickets may cost more when bought on short notice. Giving yourself several months to get ready can mean security(安全) and savings.
Do your homework: No matter where you go, research the places you will visit. Decide what
to see. Travel books will provide information on the cheapest hotels and restaurants.
Plan sensibly: Write down what you expect to spend for food and hotels. Stick to your plan or you may not have enough money to cover everything.
Travel in groups: Find someone who is interested in visiting the same places. By travelling with others you can share costs and experiences.
Work as you go: Need more money to support your trip? Look for work in the places you visit.
Go off the beaten path: Tourist cities may be expensive. You may want to rethink your trip and go a lesser-known area. Smaller towns can have many interesting activities and sights.
Pack necessary things: The most important things to take are not always clothes: Remember medicine in case you get sick and snacks in case you cannot find a cheap restaurant.
Use the Internet: The Net can help to save money. Some useful websites include www.Travelocity.com, www.bargains-lowestfare.com and www.Economictravel.com. By planning sensibly, even students can enjoy the travel. Your travel experiences will be remembered for a lifetime.

Accidental fame
Julie is only eleven years old but she is famous all over the world because of her photos with wild animals. She became famous just by accident.
Her parents came to Africa with Julie many years ago when she was only five. They work for a charity called ‘Save the Children’. Julie soon made many new friends there. She became the best friend of a young local boy called Kanu.
One day Julie and Kanu were playing together. She was showing him how to use a camera. Then, Kanu wanted to take a photo of Julie with an unusual tree behind her. He couldn’t fit her and the tree in the camera’s frame, so he told her to stand closer to the tree. He took the photo of Julie standing under the tree. Nothing happened until they got the photos developed. When they looked at the photo, they saw something hanging down from the tree. At first, they thought it was a snake. Then they realized it was a leopard’s tail. In the photo Julie was only about a metre away from it!
Julie decided to go back to the tree to see if the leopard was still there. She wanted to get a close-up shot of her and the leopard. She and Kanu went in the middle of the day because they knew that big cats are often asleep at that time of the day.
After they got the photo of Julie with the leopard sleeping in the tree, they showed it to Kanu’s father, who owned the local newspaper. He put the photo of Julie and the leopard in the Sunday paper. When people saw the photo, they wrote letters to the newspaper asking to see more. So Julie started to take more photos with lions, snakes and many other kinds of wild animals. And her photography career was soon up and running! Soon a lot of magazines started to buy the photos
from her. Very generously, Julie and her parents donated much of the money to the charity “Save the Children”.
