The Flowbee was invented over twenty-five years ago. What is it? It is a special machine that cuts hair. Was it invented by a barber? No! The Flowbee was made by an American man who built things with wood.

In 1987, Rick Hunt was working in his wood shop. A lot of wood was cut in the shop so little pieces of wood were everywhere. Pieces of wood were on the ground, on Hunt’s shirt, and in his hair. The shop had a big vacuum(真空吸尘器)for cleaning. Hunt used it to clean himself.

The pieces of wood were easily sucked(吸)from his clothes and his hair. As Hunt’s hair was cleaned by the vacuum, he got an idea. “This would be a good way to cut hair,” He thought.

Some special parts were added to a common vacuum. In this way, the first Flowbees were built.

These first Flowbees were sold out of Hunt’s home. Then, a fall festival was held near Hunt’s home. He took all of Flowbees there, and a lot of people bought them! Next, Hunt went on television with the Flowbee. More and More Flowbees were sold.

More than a million Flowbees were sold in America the next ten years. Today, this interesting machine is sold to people around the world. Hunt’s clever way to cut hair really works. Sometimes great ideas come from surprising places. 24. What kind of machine is the Flowbee? A. A wood cutting machine. C. A funny machine that nobody uses 25. Where were the first Flowbee sold? A. How long would it take you to read a dictionary?

Do you like reading? Do you have trouble finding a novel(小说) that takes your interest? What do you think of following Ammon Shea’s example and starting reading a dictionary? Mr. Shea owns over 1,000 dictionaries and he likes to read them for fun. He recently spent a

year reading all 20 different kind of dictionaries. The dictionary contains( 包括) more than 20,000 pages and over 59 million words. As he read from A to Z, he noted down interesting words in a notebook. This includes( 包括) words such as happify, meaning to make someone happy, and tripudiate which means to dance, skip or leap for joy. Mr Shea also kept a diary about his experience which has been turned into a best-selling book. Why did he do this?

He says it was fun: “I’ve always enjoyed reading dictionaries, they are far more interesting

than people give them credit for (给他们的赞扬). I’m not against big words or fancy or obscure words, but I should use them because they should also be used,” he said.

In fact, as a result of reading so many words, Mr. Shea often forgot his everyday vocabulary. He wrote, “My head was so full of words that I often had trouble forming simple sentences.”

Mr. Shea is not alone in his love of reading dictionaries. Elaine Higgleton, a representative of Collins Coluild dictionaries, said that thousands of crossword and Scrabble fans (拼字游戏 迷) read dictionaries for fun and to improve their game. Ms Higgleton did however note that, “It’s probable not the best way to learn English, and you’d learn more than you need.” It is not known how many of the 59 million words Mr. Shea has remembered but he has certainly made history with his

hobby.

Many strong and out-of-control emotions are recognized as an illness. People who are always very sad have depression (抑郁症); those who worry a lot have anxiety.

But what about anger problems? Anger is largely viewed as a secondary emotion – one caused by other emotions. People are thought to be angry because they are sad, anxious or stressed. In the past, many doctors didn’t accept the idea that anger could be a problem all on its own.

Today, though, a growing number of mental health experts think that anger is a serious problem that needs its own treatment.

How to tell the difference between “normal” anger and “anger problem” is difficult. After all, everyone gets really mad from time to time. Experts point out a few ways.

Disordered anger, as it is sometimes called, tends to be of greater intensity (强度). It takes very little to set off a person with an anger problem, and their responses (反应) are very strong. An example: While most people would get upset if a driver cut them off, someone with disordered anger might try to chase down the car and force it off the road.

And in cases of disordered anger, the person gets angry more frequently and his/her anger lasts longer. For most people, angry feelings disappear quickly. But people with anger problems often stay angry for days, weeks or even years; their feelings of anger don’t disappear over time.

Consequences are also important to consider: Disordered anger often damages people’s lives. “It interferes ( 干扰) with people’s relationships and their jobs,” says Raymond Chip Tafrate, a US psychologist. “Even their health is affected.”

Anger clearly increases the risk of certain health problems, as many studies have shown. “When a person is angry, their heart beats faster and their blood pressure goes up,” says Howard Kassinove, a professor at Hofstra University in New York. Over time, these changes take their toll on the body, he adds.

Experts suggest that people with an anger problem take anger-management programs. The programs teach people to control their responses to stressful situations through the use of relaxation techniques. The programs sometimes include life-skills training as well: increasing someone’s level of competence ( 竞争)– whether on the job or as a parent or partner – helps bring down stress and cut angry feelings.

30. A person who_________ most possibly has disordered anger in the experts’ opinion?

A. can’t get out of anger quickly B. is dissatisfied with relationships C. has high blood pressure D. is worried about his job

31. What does the underlined word Consequences mean? A. Responses. B. Effects. C. Reasons. D. Feelings 32. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Anger is an secondary emotion that makes people sad and stressed. B. Anger was recognized as an illness by most doctors in the past. C. A person with an anger problem gets angry more often and easily. D. The use of relaxation techniques is the best way to manage anger. 33. What is the best title of the passage? A. Can anger be an illness? B. Is it disordered anger?

C. Can anger influence our life? D. Is anger management important?

四、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共 10 分,每小题 2 分)

Most people know something about the green house effect. Factories sent gases such as carbon dioxide, or CO2, into

4 / 8

the atmosphere, the air around the earth. In the past, this wasn’t a problem because trees absorbed, or drank in CO2. But now people are cutting down billions of trees in many countries. At the same time, factories are sending more CO2 into the atmosphere. It’s difficult to believe, but factories put billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year! One ton is 2000 pounds, so this is a lot of pollution. There is too much CO2 and there aren’t enough trees, so the world is getting warmer. In other words, we have a greenhouse effect. This is terrible for the environment.

What can we do about this? First, we can stop using so much coal and oil. We can learn to use different kinds of

energy: the sun, wind, sand heat from volcanoes (火山)and from inside the earth. Second, instead of cutting down trees, we should plant more trees. One tree can absorb(吸收) ten pounds of carbon dioxide every year.

The trees are good for the earth’s atmosphere and for Guatemala. In small towns and villages in Guatemala, most women are poor and have hard lives. Trees help them in three ways. First, the Connecticut factory pays them to plant the trees. Their pay is corn, not money. The corn is good for their children. Second, these women know a lot about their environment. They know where to plant, when to plant, and what kinds of trees to plant. For example, they plant many fruit trees. The fruit gives them vitamins to their families’ foods. Other trees are good for firewood. In a few years, the women won’t spend so much time walking for wood. Third, all these trees are good for the soil. Now rain can’t wash the soil down the mountains so easily.

This plan isn’t enough to stop the greenhouse effect. But it’s a beginning. The women of Guatemala are helping themselves and helping their environment. As one woman says, “We’re planting for our families, for our children.” 34. Where are factories sending more CO2 into? ______________________________________.

35. How much can a tree absorb carbon dioxide a year? _______________________________________.

36. How many good points can women in Guatemala get from planting trees? ___________________________________________.

37. What can we do to stop the world getting warmer according to Paragraph 2? ___________________________________________. 38. What does the passage mainly talk about? ___________________________________________.
