Time flies like an arrow,it has been three months or so since I became an English major. For the time being, the end of this semester is drawing near,we have no alternative but to confront with the coming first final examination of the college years. Thanks to the assistance of the teachers and the fierce competition among the follow students,I have made progress to some extent in English learning. The followings are what I have managed and failed to do in this semester.
First and foremost,I have been keeping a vocabulary notebook since the beginning of the term as the textbook instructed us,which proves to be not only a key to pass the TEM4,but also to speed up when reading a piece of English material. What's more ,I am through with a masterpiece from Jane Austin called
Pride and prejudice ,which showed us a genuine picture of an affluent family in
British shortly after the Industrial Revolution. At the very beginning,I read the simplified version of the classics and got the general view of the story. After becoming familiar with the author and the history background as well,I have lost myself in appreciating the world-famous literature work, which had been passed on from generation to generation, and thought of us the wisdom of the British. Apart from reading English novels, knowing a little about well-known writers, for example Mark Twain,Charles Dickens and so on,I succeeding in watching an American movie every two weeks in my leisure time, which offers me a excellent chance to approach western culture in a more relaxing atmosphere, leading to better listening skills by and by.
However,in spite of the success I have achieved in the first semester,I didn't try what I could to keep pace with the current international affairs by reading newspapers and listening to the world news.Furthermore, some plans I made for myself seemed to be too ambitious for a freshman majoring in English to accomplish in some respects. I should have finish Jane Eyre in a couple of weeks, which I used to assign myself two chapters each week,I eventually quit due to the delicate words and expressions.
From now on,I have made a resolution to keep up with the era by reading the foreign newspapers and website, besides I will try all my efforts to have a full view of them as well as keep them in mind all the time.?Last but not the least,I am determined to expand my reading horizons in all reading material related to English, ranging from literature, global news, economy, politics, let alone to say the international communications.
As far as I am concerned,I hold the firm belief that there is no shortcut to become a successful English major unless a lot of expansive reading is done every day.I believe that as long as you persevance in doing this, you will find yourself enjoying the English culture and having a good command of it sooner or later.
