From the earliest times men seem to have noticed the habits of various insects, and to have learnt lessons from them. Ants and bees, which work very hard during the summer, and collect enough food to 1 during winter, give us a good 2 to follow. If we waste time 3 the conditions are good for work, we shall probably 4 later, when we may be willing to work, but unable to do so. Moths(蛾), and some other insects, cannot help flying towards a 5 of any

April 22 is Earth Day. On this day we have a lot of activities to improve our environment. Some of us plant trees outside the city. Some pick up rubbish in the neighborhood or parks. Most of us also give money to organizations that help save forests and endangered animals. Several groups of students go to the streets, telling people passing by how seriously our earth is being damaged; the air and seas, lakes and rivers are being polluted, many rain forests are disappearing, a lot of wild animals are killed… By doing all these we want to make everybody understand we have only one earth and that we must celebrate Earth Day every day!

If people stop studying after graduation from school, they can not keep pace with the steps of social development and easy to drop out of the fierce competition. Take the development of IT as an example. The new information technologies come to our life every day. If a person does not learn the latest knowledge, they would not be able to develop new technology and products. Therefore a person should obtain new knowledge for the whole life.
14
As the saying goes, “Never too late to learn”. To fit in with the development of society, a person must study during his whole life. Otherwise he will fall behind others.
Possible version: Dear Editor,
I’m writing to tell you about the discussion we’ve had about whether students should listen to music while doing their homework. Opinions differ on the question. 65% of the students are against the idea of listening to music while doing their homework. They believe doing homework needs great attention. If students listen to music while doing their homework, they will be distracted by music now and then. What’s more, with the beautiful music, they might forget to do their homework without knowing it. As a result, they may spend more time on their regular homework, which means their study efficiency is low.
On the other hand, 35% think that students should enjoy listening to music while doing their homework because music can make them relaxed and in good mood. In addition, listening to music, especially light music, helps brains work fast to solve problems in an efficient way.
Yours truly,
LiHua
5. How to Solve the Problem of Sandstorm A
In North China, when spring is coming, people usually say it will be windy again. It is well-known that the deserts in the world have been increased at a frightening speed; as a result, sandstorms occur more frequently. This is partly because of man’s desire to improve his living condition. The population is increasing considerably, large stretches of land are invaded by intelligent man, the earth is full of the
15
skyscrapers and vehicles, all these result in the sandstorm.
The lack of green trees intensifies the extending of the desert. Therefore, planting a green belt of trees along the edge of desert can prevent the sand from spreading. China has been successful in building wind breaks in the northeast to keep the desert from growing. On the part of every individual, we should make every effort to plant a tree when possible. Since China has a large population, if everyone give a hand, things will be quite different.
In short, if we strengthen the sense of participation, we can make the earth greener. B
Sandstorms are getting more and more serious in some regions in the northern parts of China, especially in spring. As the sandstorms are sweeping cities with dust, they bring much trouble to people’s daily life and work. However, it has caused the concern of the whole nation.
Naturally, there are many factors that cause this abnormal climate. Firstly, the encroachment (侵犯)of the desert in Inner Mongolia is the main reason for the storms. Secondly, the continuous high temperature and little rain should also be greatly responsible for the high frequency of storms. But we shouldn’t only blame nature for the sandstorms, because, to some extent, human beings should bear partial responsibility for this phenomenon. There is no doubt that it’s our destruction of vegetation and protective forests that makes the north-wind kick up the loose soil so easily, and thus form storms. The storms will sound the alarm and should be regarded as nature’s punishment to man. In a word, the storms repeatedly warn us that it’s high time we made laws to protect our natural environment, restored the vegetation and planted more trees and tool whatever effective measures to stop the storms and protect our home planet---Earth. 6. How to protect wild life
It is thought that the population explosion has resulted in a rapid extinction of wild life. With the population fast growing in the last century, at least 60 wild species became extinct. Studies show that several responsible for wildlife dying out. First, with the fast growth of human population, animals’ habitat is using so fast that little areas are left for wildlife. For example, vast grassland was burned into farmland; and forests were destroyed to build home. As a result, wildlife has no place to survive. Second a large number of wildlife species have been killed for food, for money or for fun. Finally, global industrial pollution speeds up wildlife extinction.
In my view, it is time to take action to save all wildlife species before it is too late.
16
We have to realize that to save wildlife is to save ourselves. 7. Internet in Our Life
As more and more families have bought their own computers in recent years, Internet is accessible to almost everyone. The world-spread use of the Internet has changed our society and culture. However, while we are enjoying the convenience and benefits it brings us, we have every reason to be wary of the disadvantages it may cause.
One of the great features of Internet is the amount of information it contains. The Internet is a powerful tool that presents an opportunity for the advancement of the acquisition and application of knowledge. But as people serf the Web, too much information might puzzle them or even make them unable to deal with it. Another feature is people can exchange ideas, make friends, shop, enjoy music freely on the Internet.
However, there is rubbish on the net, which influences the teenagers badly. The new information age brings not only benefits but also computer crimes. Furthermore, the use of Internet can disrupt one’s life the same way as other addictions can. People who spend too much time on line every day may distort their sense of reality, and their depression and anxiety will increase when offline.
As the proverb says, “Every coin has two sides.” Though the Internet can bring lots of advantages, there are many disadvantages as well. We should maximize its potential. But for the evil applications of Internet, every effort should be made to fight against them.
8. What Shall We Do for 2008 Olympic Games?
By hosting the Olympic Games, we value human talent, ambition and achievement. High technology will be used in the construction of Beijing. We will let the world know more about China and Beijing, for we regard the Olympic Games as an opportunity for exchange and harmony between various cultures and peoples. We will strengthen public awareness of environmental protection. The government has made a plan to improve air and water quality. Furthermore, a huge sum of money has been spent to expand Beijing’s expressway and subway systems. In a word, China will hold this world-famous games in an extensive and innovative way. The hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games will open a new era for China. And it can be viewed as an international affirmation of the country’s program of social and economic reforms. At the same time, we should try our best to make Beijing more beautiful.
9. My Childhood
There is only one word which can describe my childhood. The word is “carefree” that so many kids today don’t understand, although they have delicious
17
food, beautiful clothes and pretty toys..
My parents have never forced me to do anything. I could recite a lot of poems and beautiful articles, but not for showing off before their friends and our relatives, just because I enjoyed rhythms and words. So I never considered them a burden. Later, when I was in the primary school, I had very little homework to do, and I was never required to be the top student.
Nor have my parents stopped me from doing anything I like. After I finished my homework, I could stay outside for a whole afternoon to do whatever I like. I used to go swimming in the river in summer and skating on the ice in winter. Sometimes I played basketball or football with my friends. I could read any book, and my parents have never prevented my reading.
Such was my childhood life, a really carefree and happy time. 10. About English learning
Nowadays, there are opposite opinions on English learning through out our country. Some think we should strengthen it because it is so useful, but I think differently.
We students spend at least three hours studying English every day. Just for listening, we have to buy tapes, recorders, walkmans or even CD players, which has wasted us a lot of time and money. What’s more, the school spend too much in helping English teaching. But what’s the use of our English learning? For most of us, we are just doing it for all kinds of exams, not for the everyday use.
So in my opinion, we should think twice about the hot climate of English learning.
