Has technology changed your life? No doubt it has. In what ways has technology changed your life and mine during the past decade? Let’s take a look. What people do with technology determines whether change is good or bad. Cell phone
During the past decade the cell phone has certainly “changed” life in all sorts of ways. Many of us have cleared the old style LAN-line phone from our homes. The cell phone with its voice, text, image, and Internet capabilities has connected us in ways people 50 years ago never dreamed of. People’s use of cell phone has changed my entertainment for a few years. I stopped going to movie theaters because I grew tired of asking people “be quiet”, “put away your phone” and so on.
More importantly, some people have changed their life a lot by using cells while driving. On one occasion I was a walker. I’ve had nearly a dozen near-misses with people running a red light while using their phone. Online shopping
In the last 10 years, online shopping has increased quickly. Whenever I can I shop online. I even send gift cards via various retailers’ websites. I like shopping online much more than in a physical store (实体店). I should also add that not once have I had a problem with so-called identity theft. I think one reason is that I only online shop at established retailers (零售商) and I
never shop via emails. Online entertainment
During the past decade the television and movie possibilities on the Internet have gone from near zero to thousands. I rent and watch movies via Internet much more now than from a physical store. All the major networks now also offer shows on the Internet. It won’t be long before more of us are using a single device for all those activities. Some people are already doing it.
I’ve touched on only a few obvious ways technology has changed life over the past decade. It’s changing lives for better or for worse in all parts of our life: medicine, education and warfare to name a few. If the past decade is any indication, the next decade will be even more amazing. 41. Some drivers have nearly knocked into the authors because they _______. A. were not skillful enough in driving C. ran a red light at the crossing
B. were not familiar with the roads D. did not focus on driving
42. From the listed new technology we can conclude _______. A. they all have brought a lot of convenience to our life B. more and more people are interested in new technology C. the author isn’t satisfied with the new technology at all D. they have both advantages and disadvantages to our life 43. What’s the author’s attitude toward future technology? A. Worried.
B. Opposed.
C. Hopeful.
D. Uncertain.
44. The passage is developed by _______. A. describing development of technology B. explaining the advantages of technology C. listing changes brought by technology D. showing people’s attitudes towards technology
45. The author wrote this text in order to give us some examples of _______.
A. how technology has changed our life
B. how we enjoy our life in modern times
C. what changed our life in the last decade D. what has taken place in the field of science

Summer is the time for having fun in the sun! Children and teens should be able to have fun but they also should be safe. Parents have many concerns when their children are out having fun
without their supervision(监管). Here are some summer safety tips for children and teens that all parents should discuss with their sons and daughters.
First of all, children and teens shouldn’t talk to strangers. It is important to always remind your children and teenagers know that if someone they don’t know comes up to them they should immediately either run away if they are alone or go somewhere where there are other people. If someone tries to force them into a car, tell your children they should run away to a public place for help, or start screaming loudly.
The next is water safety. In the summer time, all children and teens love going into the water to swim. Whether it’s the beach, pool, lake, or river, all children should be aware of water safety. All children should learn how to swim, but if they don’t they should never be in the water alone. Children or teens who don’t know how to swim should stay in the shallow water. Children and teens should also always swim at places where there are life guards. When it comes to pool safety, small children should always be accompanied(陪伴) by adults. For parents who own pools in their homes, they should be aware that children can get into trouble when they aren’t looking. Make sure that when the pool isn’t being used there is a cover over it or a gate so that children can’t get into it without an adult.
Then, monitor your children’s computer use. During the summer time, children and teenagers have a lot more free time to use the Internet and computers. The Internet can be a fun and educational tool for children and youths, but it can also be a dangerous one as well. This comes back to the part that children and youths should never talk to strangers. When youths are on the Internet, they may chat online with someone they don’t know. Something that you can do to make sure your child or teen is safe is to block certain websites on your computer or get child monitoring software.
Last but not least, educate your child or teen about drug and alcohol use. Children and teenagers sometimes get pressured into experimenting with drugs and alcohol at a young age. Remember to tell your children the results of illegal drug use and under-age drinking and the health effects they have on their bodies. You can also encourage your children to talk to you about these kinds of issues so they know they don’t have to hide them. 46. Whom is this text intended for? A. School children.
B. School teachers. D. Parents and children.
C. Children and teens.
47. According to the author’s opinion, summer is the time when ________.
A. children and teens are faced with dangers B. children and teens should learn to survive C. children and teens are free to do what they like D. children and teens should learn to get on with others 48. How should children deal with strangers? A. Shout out loudly.
B. Talk with them kindly.
D. Keep their secrets to themselves.
C. Get away from them.
49. What does this text mainly tell us?
A. How to keep children safe in summer time.
B. How to discourage children from taking illegal drugs. C. How to get in touch with strangers in summer time. D. How to spend the summer time in a meaningful way.
C
We had never had chickens before. The guitar player in our church had an aunt who passed away. His aunt had 20 chickens that needed a home. How poor the chickens were! We decided to buy them. We learned a lot through this project. First building a chicken coop (笼) wasn’t expensive. We used the scraps which we didn’t eat up to feed them. Though we didn’t have much time for our new family members, we discovered it was a great family project we could be involved in from the building to the cleaning and the feeding.
The educational meaning of owning chickens was also priceless. We learned that placing the coop and chickens in the yard right by your bedroom window was probably not the best idea. That lesson was the discovery that our rooster (公鸡) crowed every thirty minutes, which wasn’t necessary but at dawn. I thought the rooster had a broken internal clock (生物钟) because he would crow every morning at 4 o’clock. But then I was told he was seeing light somewhere. I realized our TV and hallway light were what woke him.
Our family loved seeing babies hatch and watching how the chickens interacted. They knew where their food was stored. We learned not to open the door of the yard unless we were prepared because the chickens had no problem making themselves at home in our kitchen. Throwing food to them would be like blowing a whistle(口哨)to start a football game. They would all run after the piece of bread. One would grab it and the others would run after him. Once he dropped it, another would pick it up and he would be the next one running after it. It was very funny.
With the chickens my husband and I could sit and relax, watching them for an hour on end, laughing and wondering at their unique interactions with each other and us. So if you want cheap, wholesome, and educational family entertainment, get some chickens!
50. The author’s family bought the chickens because they ________. A. had pity on them
B. had chickens before D. wanted to get pleasure
C. liked raising chickens
51. The underlined word “scraps” in Paragraph 1 probably means _______. A. pills that are good for animals B. places where nothing is taken up C. uneaten food that is thrown away D. food which is bought for chickens
52. According to the author, TV and hallway light caused ________. A. her to sleep very late every day
B. the rooster to crow at 4 in the afternoon C. her not to sleep well every morning D. their rooster to have a broken internal clock 53. What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The chickens were good at finding food. B. They stopped chickens entering their kitchen. C. The chickens brought them a lot of pleasure. D. The chickens ran after each other just for fun. 54. We can learn from this passage that the author ________. A. hardly had enough time for her chickens B. described all of the chickens’ activities in detail
C. thought that raising chickens was an easy but boring project
D. compared her chickens running after each other for food to a football game
D
For over 30 years I’ve been sending letters along with my Christmas cards to my family and friends, like Jana. She and I met on my first day at Illinois State University. We both came from families with six children and loved pop music and movies. After graduation we promised to keep in touch with each other, and we did for a while. We never missed sending Christmas cards.
But four years ago I didn’t get a card from her. I called her and learned she got cancer. The news hit me like a ton of bricks. A month later, Jana died. How I wished I had visited her more. When the time came to put together my Christmas card list later that year, an idea hit me: Why not do more than just sending people a card? Why not visit them?
The first one I visited was my 85-year-old godmother, Betty Jane, in Littleton, Colorado. Betty Jane doesn’t have children and always treats me like her own. We write letters all the time. In fact, she still sends me a card with ten dollars for my birthday each year. But it was 10 years since we’d seen each other. Ted, my husband, and I already planned a summer trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. Why not combine it with a visit to Betty Jane?
“Thank you for coming all this way!” Betty exclaimed when we arrived, wrapping me in her arms. Seeing Betty Jane brought us both so much joy that I knew I couldn’t stop there.
In December 2009, I took another look at my Christmas list. College friends, people from other states where we’d lived, former co-workers — so many folks to see! One name jumped off my list: Carol.
Carol and I met in college, and lived in the same dorm. She was the city mouse and I was the country mouse. She grew up in Chicago and had never been to a farm. I grew up on a farm and had never been to a big city. Oh, how we loved to compare our childhoods! I searched for her name online. I’d recognize that smile and blonde hair anywhere. “I know it’s been a while,” I wrote. “But do you think I could visit you this summer? I’d love to catch up.”
Three days later, she responded, “Sue! Wow! Yes, I’d love to see you!” It took just three hours by Amtrak to Naperville, Illinois. But as I stepped off the train, my worries came back. What if we didn’t share the same interest anymore?
“There you are!” shouted Carol. “I could never forget your laugh.” The years instantly melted away. We promised not to wait another 27 years.
As the summer wound down, I caught up on some cleaning. I came across a box of old letters. Something in me just couldn’t throw them away. I opened the first one. “Hi, Susan, Jordan said “mama” for the first time today,” it read. I hadn’t heard from Terri for six years. Somehow we’d lost contact. There were more letters from her in that box, so I read them in order. She and I had been pregnant (怀孕的) at the same time, so a wave of nostalgia (怀旧) came over me. I took out my old address book and dialed the last number I had for her. We met up at Applebee’s and had a great visit. I gave her all of the letters. That night she sent me an e-mail. “I can’t tell you how much it means to me to have a record of Jordan’s first years and our friendship, and to think we
were brought back together by your Christmas list!”
Thanks to that list, I’ve been to plays, markets, lunches, church and concerts with old friends. Whenever I’m having a hard day, I think about where I will go for my next trip.

The person I am grateful to
Everyone needs to be thankful for what he or she has. For me, I am especially grateful to my mother, who teaches me to be responsible and patient in life. As a traditional woman, my mom taught me invaluable lessons in responsibility by setting a weekly chore schedule. Every weekend, my mother would instruct me to clean the floor or wash clothes although it seemed boring. When I was going to give up, she would ask me to carry on, no matter how difficult it was. Now I am able to handle most problems and challenges in life due to what my mother has taught me. I will forever appreciate what my mom has done and continuously does for me.
