Luke Fortune drove from a small town in Central Oregon to Portland, where he parked his car in a paid garage overnight. The next morning, he discovered that the car’s window had been smashed along with his dreams for the future: his backpack and computer were gone.
Two days after the theft, another young man was standing outside his apartment, also in Portland. Masoud Almazrouei, 29 , was an exchange student from the United Arab Emirates. He had been approached by a man who said he had a computer for sale. Only $ 200. He needed a computer, so he bought it, took it home, and turned it on. Within seconds, he saw files and
photographs. He realized it could be stolen. Almazrouei found what appeared to be the owner’s cell phone number and called it. Fortune didn’t trust this guy with a thick accent and thought it was a trick.
Soon after, a police officer called Fortune to say that a man had dropped the computer off and had said he was sorry. He passed along the man’s number.
Fortune called and thanked Almazrouei and insisted on paying him a reward of $ 200 , the money he was out. Almazrouei refused. He said, it was his honor and duty as a Muslim to return the property to the rightful owner.
Still the encounter produced its own kind of rewards. For Fortune, it was a lesson in cultural awareness with the sometimes bitter national debate about immigrants, especially from the Arab world. “I’m from a small, mainly white town,” Fortune said. “I’ve never met a Muslim. He’s a good man.”
Almazruel’s lesson was perhaps more complex. When a story about the two young men’s encunter made it to the local papers, Almazrouei received a call from Wim Wiewel, the presrent of Portland State University, where Almazrouei is studying economics.
“We thought since you gave back the laptop, we should give you a laptop so that you’ll have one,” Wiewel told him. “We’re very proud of you. It was a great story, and you did the right thing.”
21. How did Almazrouei return the computer to Fortune finally? A. He went to Fortune’s apartment and handed it to him. B. He asked the police to return the computer to him. C. He apologized to Fortune and handed it to him. D. He sent the computer to him by express delivery. 22. Why did Fortune think it was a trick?
A. Because he used to discriminate against Muslims. B. Because he never met an immigrant before.
C. Because he believed “There is no such thing as a free lunch. ” D. Because he believed “Never talk to strangers.”
23. What does the sentence “Still the encounter produced its own kind of rewards” mean?
A. Almazrouei received a reward of $ 200 from Portland State University. B. Fortune could seek his dream with his computer back.
C. Both of the young men gained something in their own way. D. Kindness can eventually pay off one day.

As a person born with impaired eyesight, Cai Dongyue usually stays at home as he has to rely on the help of friends and family members to go outside.
Over the past year, the 76-year-old from Pudong district, Shanghai, has spent far more time outside thanks to a volunteer service launched by the Disabled Persons’ Federation in Pudong New Area in December 2017.
The service allows the blind and visually impaired to make a call with volunteers through an app called Pudong Sunshine World. Working like an online car-hailing app, the service enables users to order volunteer help through the app, reserving a time and location.

On the app, over 1, 000 volunteers, including university students and retirees, have registered to provide service in their spare time in Pudong New Area.
To guarantee users’ safety, volunteers go through a fairly strict screening process and get trained at schools for the blind before starting the work. The app also records the route of every order and users can comment on the service quality.
“We hope to extend the service to help all disabled people in Pudong New Area in the near future, and we may promote the idea to the whole city or the nation if everything works well,” Yao said.

A few years ago, I started to notice big shifts in teens’ behavior. Around 2010, teens started to spend their time much differently from the generations before. These teens and young adults all have one thing in common: Their childhood or adolescence coincided with the rise of the smart phone. For this reason, I call them iGeneration.
What makes iGen different? Growing up with a smartphone has affected nearly every aspect of their lives. They spend so much time on the Internet, texting friends and on social media that they have less leisure time for everything else. Whether it’s going to parties, shopping at the mall, or watching movies, iGen teens are participating in these social activities at a significantly low rate.
Some parents might worry about their teens spending so much time on their phones because it differs from the way they spent their own adolescence. But it is not just different ---in many ways, it’s actually worse. Spending less time with friends means less time to develop social skills. A 2014 study found that sixth graders who spent just five days at a camp without using screens ended the time better at reading emotions on others’ faces, suggesting that
iGen’s screen-filled lives might cause their social skills to shrink.
In addition, in the annual Monitoring the Future survey, the percentage of iGen teens who read a non required book every day dropped from 60 percent in 1980 to only 16 percent in 2015. Perhaps as a result, average SAT critical reading scores have dropped 14 points since 2005. ‘ ‘
iGen shows another break with the previous generations; Depression, anxiety, and loneliness have shot upward with happiness declining. The teen suicide rate increased by more than 50 percent, as did the number of teens with clinical---level depression.
Parents used to worry about their teens spending too much time with their friends--- they were a distraction, a bad influence, a waste of time. But it might be just what iGen needs now.
27. How are iGen teens different from the, generations before?
A. They are more skillful in high-tech products. B. They stay in close contact with friends.
C. They prefer to live a virtual life than a real one. D. They spend their adolescence with smartphones.
28. Why is the “annual Monitoring the Future survey” mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To stress the importance of reading the required books.
B. To explain the reason why iGeneration reads less.
C. To introduce the extracurriculum reading situation of iGeneration. D. To show the influence of reading on iGen teenagers’ mental health. 29. What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A. Depression and anxiety are the common symptoms of mental problems. B. Mental problems can be found in large numbers of iGen teens. - ,
C. Net-addicted teenagers are more likely to suffer from mental problems. D. iGen teens’ mental problems are getting more and more attention. 30. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. How the Smartphone Affected an Entire Generation of Kids? B. Parents Are Getting Serious about Teen Smartphone Addiction. C. Smartphones for Teens: Smart or Stupid?
D. Smartphones Are Changing iGen Teen’s Lifestyle.

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Why is the world’s population growing? The answer is not what you might think. The reason for the explosion is not that people have been reproducing like rabbits, but that people have stopped dropping dead like flies. In 1900,people died at the average age of 30.By 2000 the average age was 65.But while increasing health was a typical feature of the 20th century, declining birth rate could be a defining one of the 21st.
Statistics show that the average number of births per woman has fallen from 4.9 in the early 1960s to 2.5 nowadays.Furthermore, around 50% of the world’s population live in regions where the figure is now below the replacement level (i.e.2.1 births per woman) and almost all developed nations are experiencing sub-replacement birth rate. You might think that developing nations would make up the loss (especially since 80% of the world’s people now live in such nations),but you’d be wrong.Declining birth rate is a major problem in many developing regions too, which might cause catastrophic global shortages of work force within a few decades.
A great decline in young work force is likely to occur in China, for instance. What does it imply?First,China needs to undergo rapid economic
development before a population decline hits the country.Second,if other factors such as technology remain constant, economic growth and material expectations will fall well below recent standards and this could invite trouble.
Russia is another country with population problems that could break its economic promise.Since 1992 the number of people dying has been bigger than that of those being born by a massive 50%.Indeed official figures suggest the country has shrunk by 5% since 1993 and people in Russia live a shorter life now than those in 1961.Why is this occurring?Nobody is quite sure, but poor diet and above all long-time alcoholism have much to do with it.If current trends don’t bend,Russia’s population will be about the size of Yemen’s by the year 2050.
In the north of India, the population is booming due to high birth rates, but in the south, where most economic development is taking place, birth rate is falling rapidly. In a further twist, birth rate is highest in poorly educated rural areas and lowest in highly educated urban areas. In total,25% of India’s working-age population has no education. In 2030,a sixth of the country’s potential work force could be totally uneducated.
One solution is obviously to import foreign workers via immigration. As for the USA,it is almost unique among developed nations in having a population that is expected to grow by 20% from 2010—2030.Moreover,the USA has a track record of successfully accepting immigrants. As a result it’s likely to see a rise in the size of its working-age population and to witness strong economic growth over the longer term.
