APPLICATIONINFORMATION

TheLM317Mprovidesaninternalreferencevoltageof1.25Vbetweentheoutputandadjustmentsterminals.Thisisusedtosetaconstantcurrentflowacrossanexternalresistordivider(seefig.3),givinganoutputvoltageVOof:

ThedevicewasdesignedtominimizethetermIADJ(100µAmax)andtomaintainitveryconstantwithlineandloadchanges.Usually,theerrortermIADJ⋅R2canbeneglected.Toobtainthepreviousrequirement,alltheregulatorquiescentcurrentisreturnedtotheoutputterminal,imposingaminimumloadcurrentcondition.Iftheloadisinsufficient,theoutputvoltagewillrise.SincetheLM317Misafloatingregulatorand”sees”onlytheinput-to-outputdifferentialvoltage,suppliesofveryhighvoltagewithrespecttogroundcanberegulatedaslongasthemaximuminput-to-outputdifferentialisnotexceeded.Furthermore,programmableregulatorareeasilyobtainableand,byconnectingafixedresistorbetweentheadjustmentandoutput,thedevicecanbeusedasaprecisioncurrentregulator.

Inordertooptimisetheloadregulation,thecurrentsetresistorR1(seefig.3)shouldbetiedascloseaspossibletotheregulator,whilethegroundterminalofR2shouldbenearthegroundoftheloadtoprovideremotegroundsensing.EXTERNALCAPACITORS(Fig.5)

Normallynocapacitorsareneededunlessthedeviceissituatedfarfromtheinputfiltercapacitors;inwhichcaseaninputbypassisneeded.

A0.1µFdiscor1µFtantaliuminputbypasscapacitor(CI)isrecommendedtoreducethesensitivitytoinputlineimpedance.

Theadjustmentterminalmaybebypassedtogroundtoimproveripplerejection.Thiscapacitor(Cadj)preventsripplefrombeingamplifiedastheoutputvoltageisincreased.A10µFcapacitorshouldimproveripplerejectionabout80dBat120Hzana10Vapplication.

AlthoughtheLM317Misstablewithnooutputcapacitancelikeanyfeedbackcircuit,certainvaluesofexternalcapacitancecancauseexcessiveringing.Anoutputcapacitance(CO)intheformofa1µFtantaliumor25µFaluminiumelectrolyticcapacitorontheoutputswampsthiseffectandinsuresstability.

PROTECTIONDIODES(Fig.5)

WhenexternalcapacitorsareusedwithanyICregulatoritissometimesnecessarytoaddprotectiondiodestopreventthecapacitorsfromdischargingthroughlowcurrentpointsintotheregulator.

Figure5showtheLM317Mwiththerecommendedprotectiondiodesforoutputvoltagesinexcessof25Vorhighcapacitancevalues(C3>25µF,C2>10µF).DiodeD1preventsC3fromdischargingthroughtheICduringaninputshort-circuit.ThecombinationofdiodesD1andD2preventsC2fromdiscargingthroughtheregulatorduringaninputoroutputshort-circuit.
