Frank Smithson woke up and leaned over to turn off the alarm clock. \"Oh no!\" he thought to himself. ―Another day at that office; a boss who shouts at me all the time. ‖

As Frank went downstairs his eyes fell on a large brown envelope by the door. He was overjoyed when he opened it and read the letter inside. ―Bigwoods Football Pools would like to congratulate you. You have won half a million pounds. ‖

Frank suddenly came to life. The cigarette(香烟) fell from his lips as he let out a shout that could be heard halfway down the street.

At 11:30 Frank arrived at work. ―Please explain why you’re so late,‖ his boss said. ―Go and

jump in the lake,‖ replied Frank. ‖I’ve just come into a little money so this is goodbye. Find yourself someone else to shout at. ‖

That evening Frank was smoking a very expensive Havana cigar(雪茄) when a knock was heard on the door. He rushed to the door. Outside were two men, neatly dressed in gray suits. ―Mr Smithson,‖ one of them said, \"we’re from Bigwoods Pools. I’m afraid there’s been a terrible mistake … ‖

Eating too much fatty food, working out too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately: the air you breathe.

Previous studies have linked high exposure (暴露)to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problem, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack or stroke (中风)within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one review of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants (污染物)were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure. A separate study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers to be of “moderate” (良好)quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk

of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure.

The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However, it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health. 24. The text mainly discusses the relationship between ______ . A. heart problems and air quality B. heart problems and exercising C. heart problems and smoking D. heart problems and fatty food

25. The underlined word ―modest‖ in Paragraph 3 most probably means ______ . A. relatively high B. extremely low C. relatively low D. extremely high 26. What can we learn from the text?

A. Eating fatty food has immediate effects on your heart. B. The EPA conducted many studies on air quality. C. Moderate air quality is more harmful than smoking. D. Stricter regulations on pollutants should be made.

27. The author’s purpose of writing the text is most likely to _______. A. inform B. persuade C. describe D. entertain

C

Sometimes children do not do what their parents tell them to do.When this happens,a parent tries to help the child to do the right thing. When this does not work, the parent usually punishes the child.

There are many things that a parent can do.One thing that people have done is to spank the child. When a parent spanks a child, they will use their hand or a hard object to strike them on the bottom. This means showing the child that they have done something wrong.

One parent remembers being spanked when he was a child. His parents used a wooden spoon. When he spanked his own children with his hand, he saw that he put a red mark on his child’s leg.He never did that again.

One problem with spanking is that it teaches the child to hit someone when they do not like what the other person is doing.Another problem with spanking is that the parent is usually angry and can hit the child too hard.Sometimes parents will use spanking for everything and not try other ways to get the child to do the right thing.

Many parents are not sure of what to do instead of spanking. Some people think that their religion tells them that spanking is okay. Some think that the law lets them do it.The courts(法院)say that parents have the right to teach their children how to behave.

Other things should be tried before a parent decides to spank a child.Telling the child exactly what is wanted from them can ne one thing.Giving a child more than one choice is another thing that can be tried.Getting down to the child’s level and taking a more child-friendly approach can help as well.

28.According to the passage, when children do something wrong, one thing that parents usually do to punish them is to ________.

A.strike them on the bottom B.try to help them do the right thing C.teach them what to do D.take them to court 29.Which of the following is NOT the problem caused by spanking? A.It makes parents try other ways to make the child do right. B.The parents may get angry and hit the child too hard. C.Sometimes parents may use spanking for everything. D.It teaches the child to hit others when they offend him or her.

30. Which of the following can best describe the writer’s attitude towards spanking? A. favorable B. indifferent (不关心) C. interested D. unfavorable

31.From this passage,we can conclude that__________. A.good children always do the right thing

B.parents have no choice but to spank their children

C.parents should try their best to avoid spanking their children D.children can have more than one choice to avoid being spanked

D

Londoners are great readers. They buy vast numbers of newspapers and magazines and of

books --- especially paperbacks, which are still comparatively cheap in spite of ever-increasing rises in the costs of printing. They still continue to buy ―proper‖ books, too, printed on good paper and bound(装订)between hard covers.

There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in book-selling. Perhaps the best known of these is Charring Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the celebrated one which boasts of being ―the biggest bookshop in the world‖ to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens’ time. Some of these shops stock, or will obtain, any kind of book, but many of them specialize in second-hand books, in art books, in foreign books, in books on philosophy, politics or any other of the countless subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes only in books about ballet!

Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books, Charring Cross Road is not the cheapest. For the really cheap second-hand books, the collector must venture off the beaten track, to Farringdon Road, for example, in the East Central district of London. Here there is nothing so impressive as bookshops. The booksellers come along each morning and pour out their sacks of books onto small hand carts. And the collectors, some professionals and some amateurs, have been waiting for them. In places like this they can still, occasionally, pick up for a few pence an old one that may be worth many pounds. 32. ―Londoners are great readers‖ means that __________. A. Londoners are great because they read a lot. B. There are a great number of readers in London C. Londoners read a lot

D. Londoners are readers who read only great books 33. According to this passage, Charring Cross Road __________. A. is famous for its bookshops B. is in the suburbs of London C. contains various kinds of shops D. is the busiest street in London

34. In this passage, what does the underlined part ―venture off the beaten track‖ mean? __________.

A. buy books in a most busy street B. waste time looking for books C. move away from a busy street D. take a risk of losing one’s life

35. On Farringdon Road, _________.

A. you can find fine bookshops for the latest books B. you can see book sellers selling books on hand-carts C. there are only small bookshops for the second-hand books

D. the same books as the ones in the bookshops of Charring Cross Road are sold

Getting older

No one really knows how and why people change as they get older. 36 . Aging is a complex and varied process that varies in how it affects different people and organs. In fact, even in one person, different organ systems ―age‖ at different rate.

At a certain point in our lives our body systems will begin to weaken. 37 . It may become more difficult for us to see and hear. The slow change of aging causes our bodies to lose some of their ability to bounce back from disease and injury. In order to live longer, we have always tried to slow or stop this change that leads us toward the end of our lives.

38 . A good diet plays an important role. The amount and the type of exercise we get are another two factors. 39 . But scientists studying the aging problem want to know: Why do people grow old? They hope that by studying the aging medical science they may be able to make the length of life longer.

40 . Many consider the later part of life to be the best time for living. Physical activity may become less, but often we get better understanding of the world and ourselves.

What we consider the old age now may only be middle-aged some day soon. Who knows, with so many advances in medical science happening so quickly, life length may one day be measured in centuries, rather than in years!

A. Our strength may become weaker.

B. Symptoms include a lack of energy, slow reactions, insomnia and poor memory. C. Our living condition is yet another.

D. Also, no theory sufficiently explains all the changes of the aging process E. As for diet, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. F. Many factors decide our health.

In order to avoid traffic jams, I strongly recommend some effective measures should be taken. First, we should encourage students to come to school by bus or by subway, which can not only save them a lot of time, but also cut their transportation fares. Besides, cars should not be allowed to park in front of the school gate.

I do hope my suggestions will be considered and the phenomenon can disappear soon. Tom
